Description
This listing is for one replacement "crush plate" to visually convert a WPG reproduction MKII Hawkins mine to a MKI (the only model of Hawkins mine used in Normandy). The third picture in this listing shows a none converted WPG MKII mine so you can see how visually different the MKI crash plate is (see further details below).
These reproduction plates are custom formed out of 20ga steel with precision machine cut slots (to match the slot pattern of WPG crush plates) and painted with red oxide primer to best match the color of original WW2 MKI mines.
To install simply use a flat head screwdriver to lift the 4 prongs securing the WPG crush plate to the WPG mine, lift the plate off the prongs, slide the new plate into position and bend the prongs back into place. If you want to paint your Hawkins mine to best match originals, I suggest Rust-Oleum "Rusty Metal Primer" available at Walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot (See attached picture).
Like original mines, it is suggested to secure them to the wearers leg with the crush plate facing out and the smooth side of the mine against the leg (as pictured). This will provide the most comfort as well as prevent the steel plate from bending.
As supported by period photos and confirmed by leading historians around the world, the MKI mine was the only version of the Hawkins mine used in Normandy. Currently, the only version of the Hawkins mine being reproduced is the MKII which is easily identified by the outward facing vertical "rib" running the length of the crush plate. The MKI mines on the other hand were most easily recognized by their inward facing rib running the width of the crush plate.
These plates are made to match the size and slot spacing of WPG mines only. Seller cannot guarantee these plates will fit on any other reproduction Hawkins mine on the market.
This listing includes the replacement MKI Crush plate only. WPG Hawkins mine, spray paint, leg straps, and other items pictured are for tutorial/display purposes only.
