Description
Beautiful and in outstanding original condition.I’m not sure if this is from WWI or WWII.
The end of the trunk is marked Coast Artillery Corps Captain 4th Corps M.V.M.
It is 44” wide by 16” deep by 15” tall.
Complete with original leather handles, hardware, top shelf, compartments, and leather straps inside. I do not have the key for the lock.
The leather handles are frail and should not be used to lift this trunk. One of the handles has been repaired.
I believe the long compartment on the bottom in back was used to store a gun. It has two straps and an attached pouch to put the tip of a gun barrel.
This is a beautiful piece of U.S. military history, as well as a beautiful decorative and functional piece.
Shipping is based on the size and weight of the package and your location. It is expensive primarily because of its large size. Contact me if you wish to ship this item another way. Use dimensions listed and the weight of 45 lbs plus packaging materials. Free local pick up is welcomed and okay.
When I acquired this trunk there was a paper inside (photo #12) that reads:
The National Guard was founded December 13, 1636. It is the oldest component of the armed forces of the United States and one of the nations longest enduring institutions.
In 1840 the enrolled militia was disbanded and replaced by the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia- M.V.M.
The U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps (CAC) was a corps level organization responsible for coastal, harbor, and anti-aircraft defense of the United States between 1901 and 1950. The CAC also operated heavy and railway artillery during World War I.
Prior to 1901 each of the seven artillery regiments contained both heavy and light artillery batteries. In February 1901 the Artillery Corps was divided into two types: Field Artillery and Coast Artillery.
In 1907 Congress split the Field Artillery and Coast Artillery into separate branches, creating a separate Coast Artillery Corps (CAC).
