    Description

Vintage Essexware Australian Aboriginal Motif Tea Pot
Essexware was produced by English migrants, Mr. & Mrs. Gordon & Irene Dunstan at Gladstone Road, Leura, in the Blue Mountains of Australia in the early to mid 1950s. "Essexware" was coined from Essex, the English county of origin of Irene Dunstan. By 1955 the Dunstans employed 14 craftspeople. These are sought after collectables because of the Aboriginal themes and designs were made before the appropriation of the style of other cultures was rightly criticized, and illegal in the case of outright copying. The Dunstans were both inspired and copied original artwork from the Melbourne Ward's Museum of Natural History. Interest in Aboriginal motifs surged when Queen Elizabeth II toured Australia in 1954. Sadly, in 1957, the pottery was destroyed by fire, and the couple returned to England after the tragedy. Essexware was produced for a very limited time making them highly collectible today.
