    Description

    STADIMETER, SEXTANT TYPE
FOR U.S. NAVY BUREAU SHIPS MARK 5 MOD
    SER. NO. -N 15401 - 1944
    BY SCHICK INCORPORATED
    STAMFORD, CONN U.S.A.
Up for bid is a U.S. Navy Bureau of Ship Stadimeter, Sextant Type, Mark 5, Serial No. N 15401 manufactured by Schick Incorporated, Stamford, Conn. 1944.
This stadimeter is in very good original condition with all parts present including lens, screw driver, special nut adjuster, and mirrors wrapped in paper.
It has original brass tags on both the box and Stadimeter with matching serial numbers.
The original instruction sheet overall is in legible condition. Even with a split in the wood, the words can still be read.
The locking hooks are all intact and working.
    The mahogany box measures approximately 11 ½” L x 11 ½” W x 5 ½” H. It has cracks in the top and bottom panels.
This device, looking almost like a sextant, was used to measure the distance in yards a ship was away from the operator of the stadimeter. Used mostly to maintain a safe or constant distance between ships traveling in a convoy. Other uses included measuring the distance of enemy ships to determine if they were in range of guns or torpedoes.
The unit was used just like a sextant; however, the operator needed to know the height, or mast height of the ship they were measuring.
Setting its height on the graduated arc, holding the unit just like a sextant, and viewing the top of the ship’s mast through the “horizon mirror/glass.” Then turning the “drum scale,” which moves the rear “index mirror,” until the ship’s mast and horizon lined up together in the “horizon mirror.” The operator would then read the ship’s away distance in yards. This unit can measure a ship between 50-200 feet high, and 200-10,000 yards away.
Schick, best known as a razor manufacturer, made stadimeters for the U.S. Navy during WWII.
