Description
These are four old Australian Aboriginal artifacts from the central desert collected by Stan Moriarty in the late 1940s-1960s. They all have his accession numbers on them with the shield having a particularly low one, A27. Two of the clubs, the older fluted ones, have consecutive numbers A173 and A174. The third club, A353, seems to have been collected much later than the others and is fairly plain. Three of the items also have small numbered paper labels from an old auction sale. It is remarkable that theses four items have managed to stay together over the years. Australian Stan Moriarty amassed a huge collection of Australian Aboriginal and New Guinea artifacts over the years with much of his collection going to the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, before he died of a heart attack in the mid 1970s. The rest of his collections were sold at auction in the later 1970s and into the '80s. For a comprehensive view of his life and collections please check out "Plumes and Pearl Shells", the excellent catalogue produced by the AGNSW for its 2015 exhibition of New Guinea Highland art, much of it from the Moriarty collection. Shield is 23 1/8" long and 6 7/8" wide. The clubs are 24", 26", and 26 1/2" long.I am happy to combine shipping. Any shipping over payment will be refunded. Shipping to the USA only.
